Introducing SmartGeo

We are currently recruiting talented graduate students for SmartGeo, an innovative interdisciplinary graduate program funded by the National Science Foundation IGERT program. SmartGEO brings together Ph.D. students and faculty from geoengineering, geosciences, engineering and computer sciences to advance intelligent geosystems - natural and engineered earth structures that sense their environment and adapt to improve performance. This collaborative culture provides the most effective way to bring about significant leaps in understanding these complex geosystems. Faculty and students pursue scholarship in collaborative research teams. Equally important to the SmartGeo mission, we aim to train holistic Ph.D. graduates by instituting a formalized program in Leadership and Teamwork and a significant component on social/environmental ethics and policy. The technical issues addressed by this Intelligent Geosystems Initiative carry significant social and political challenges, and are increasingly wrestled with at city, state and federal levels. We aim to train Ph.D. Fellows capable of playing significant roles in these policy discussions. Visit smartgeo.mines.edu for more information and to apply.
